Fees on every sale

  • Referral fee. Amazon's commission, a percentage of the total price set by category: 15% in most, 8% in some, tiered in others, with a $0.30 minimum in most. Every category's rate.
  • FBA fulfillment fee. Per unit shipped from Amazon's warehouse, set by size tier, shipping weight and price band. Check yours in Amazon's Revenue Calculator; it changes every year.
  • Closing fee. $1.80 per item in Media categories: books, music, video and software.

Fees each month

  • Selling plan. The Professional plan is $39.99 a month; the Individual plan is $0.99 per item sold instead.
  • Monthly storage. Per cubic foot of space your inventory takes, higher from October to December. Storage fees.
  • Aged inventory surcharge. On units stored past a set number of days. Old stock costs more every month it stays.
  • Low-inventory-level fee. On some standard-size products when stock runs low relative to sales.

Fees some sellers pay

  • Inbound placement fee. For shipments sent to fewer warehouses than Amazon would spread them across.
  • Removal and disposal. Per unit you ask Amazon to send back or destroy.
  • Returns processing. On some categories with high return rates.
  • Refund administration. When you refund an order, Amazon returns the referral fee less $5.00 or 20% of it, whichever is less.
  • Advertising. Not a fee, but for most sellers the largest cost after the product itself. What is ACOS?

Where fees can be lowered

  • Packaging. The fulfillment fee steps up with size tier and weight. A smaller box can move a product down a tier.
  • Price points. In Beauty, Baby and Grocery the referral rate drops from 15% to 8% at or under a threshold. The FBA fee also differs by price band.
  • Stock levels. Send what sells in a few months. Storage and aged inventory charges are the cost of the rest.
